BARSTOW • The brother of a man stabbed to death in September is in critical condition after he was shot in the chest Monday night.
Toney Hodge, 19, approached a police car on patrol at 11:09 p.m. Monday at the 700 block of East Virginia Way and reported that he had been shot at Helen Runyon Parkway, said Barstow police Sgt. Andy Espinoza Sr.
Espinoza said Hodge is the brother of the late Anthoney Brown, 27, who was stabbed to death Sept. 11 at 755 East Virginia Way. Police, however, do not believe the two incidents are related.
Hodge was transported to Barstow Community Hospital and later transferred to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment of an "in and out" bullet wound. Espinoza said Hodge is in critical but stable condition.
When interviewed by detectives, Hodge said he was walking south on Helen Runyon Parkway near Kelly Street when he was greeted by an unknown person who shot him from a distance. Hodge said he ran from the scene until he flagged down the patrol car on Virginia Way.
Espinoza said police received a number of disturbance calls from residents on Virginia Way near where Hodge was picked up Monday complaining of loud parties.
Hodge told detectives the shooter is a young black man who wore a dark hooded sweatshirt. Espinoza said police are currently in the process of interviewing witnesses.
Police continue to investigate the shooting and ask anyone with information to call Barstow police at 760-255-5111. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the WE-TIP hotline at 1-800-782-7463 or visit www.wetip.com.
