BARSTOW • The Barstow High School football team's defense will need to keep a close eye on Derrick Dison today.
The Aztecs travel to face Burroughs at 7 p.m. in Ridgecrest for Barstow's second and the Burros' first Desert Sky League contest. Dison, Burroughs' quarterback, has led his team to a 3-3 record so far this season. He has also led the Burros, a team that runs a nearly balanced offense, in passing and rushing yards. Dison is ranked third in the DSL for passing, 534 yards, and rushing, 438 yards, yardage on the season. Dison has averaged 90 yards in the air and 73 on the ground this season.
When Dison passes he a .539 completion percentage, and he has thrown for three touchdowns. On the ground he has six touchdown runs.
However, Dison's running game displays one of the Burros' flaws — fumbles. Burroughs has fumbled the ball 12 times, losing possession seven times, this season to lead the DSL, and Dison leads the Burros with five. Burroughs second leading rusher, Frank Brown, has three fumbles this season. Dison has also had three interceptions on the season.
The Aztecs will look to take advantage of the Burros' penchant for losing possession of the ball.
Barstow has had a rough start to the season going 1-5, but many of the difficulties can be attributed to the offense. Barstow's defense has played solid this season despite its record. The Aztecs lead the DSL in tackles and interceptions both of which could prove troublesome for Dison and the Burros.
