BARSTOW A large cloud of smoke filled the air when a vehicle caught fire near Fort Irwin Road and Spadra Street Wednesday evening.

The vehicle was an abandoned mid-sized pick-up truck, according to Chief Darrell Jauss of the Barstow Fire Department.

Barstow firefighters assisted the San Bernardino County Fire Department and Fort Irwin Fire Department after the county fire department received a call reporting the fire at 7:23 p.m. Wednesday, according to Megan Blaney, county fire spokeswoman.

According to Vicki Sundstrom, an executive assistant at the county fire department, flames from the vehicle spread to nearby vegetation. There were no reported injuries.

Officials do not know what started the fire, Jauss noted.
