BARSTOW • Students attending three of the schools in the Barstow Unified School District will have to set their alarms a little earlier this September.
Barstow High School, Barstow Junior High School and Central High School will be starting earlier this fall because of changing bus schedules due to the closure of Barstow Intermediate School, according to Assistant Superintendent of Education Teresa Healy.
While Barstow High School students will be maintaining the same school day by starting and ending 15 minutes earlier, CHS will be adding time while BJHS will be slightly shortening its day.
CHS will be adding a total of 20 more minutes of instruction time by starting five minutes earlier and ending 15 minutes later, said Healy. Staff at the alternative high school decided that they wanted to increase class time with students in order to improve the school's accreditation standing.
Middle-schoolers at BJHS will be spending one minute less on campus, but will actually be getting more classroom time. Passing time in between class periods will be shortened from five minutes to four minutes, Healy said, resulting in an overall gain in classroom time.
All elementary schools will continue to start at 8:30 a.m.
According to Lisa Morris, transportation supervisor for First Class, Inc., the bus routes and stop locations will remain the same for all students. Pick-up times will change for middle- and high-schoolers, but won't change for elementary students.
The altered schedules will also apply to minimum days on Wednesdays, Healy noted.
BHS senior Ryan Horner said he doesn't mind having to get up earlier this fall.
"Fifteen minutes isn't that big of a difference," Horner said.
He noted the change will actually benefit students with activities after school.
"If someone had to be somewhere at 2:30 p.m., that would help them out," said the 17-year-old.
English teacher Lyn Schrader agreed, saying that despite students usually not wanting to start early in the morning, they will probably be glad to end the day earlier to get to after-school jobs.
"They are desperate for that extra 15 [to] 20 minutes," Schrader said.
Schedules of bus routes and stops will be published one week before BUSD starts school Sept. 8, Healy said.
