BARSTOW • A 22-year-old Barstow-area man died in a crash with a semi truck on Interstate 15 Sunday night.
Justin George Ervin, a resident of Hodge — between Barstow and Helendale — died at the scene after his car rear-ended a tractor-trailer on southbound Interstate 15, just north of Barstow Road at about 10:40 p.m., according to a coroner's report.
A report from the California Highway Patrol stated that alcohol did not appear to be a factor, but Officer Taj Johnson noted that toxicology test results have not returned.
According to the CHP report, Ervin was merging onto Interstate 15 from the westbound Interstate 40 in a 2007 Subaru STI when he failed to slow for a semi truck that was reportedly traveling at 35 or 40 miles per hour. Ervin turned to the left but could not avoid hitting the truck's trailer, according to the report.
Both vehicles came to rest on the right shoulder of the road.
The coroner's report stated that Ervin was wearing his seatbelt and was not thrown from the vehicle. According to the CHP report, he suffered a blunt force injury to the head.
There were no passengers in the Subaru, and the driver of the truck was uninjured.
