BARSTOW Four school administrators in the Barstow Unified School District are slated to be moved to different schools or positions next year, according to the school board agenda for the Tuesday meeting.

If the board approves the item, which is listed under the meeting's consent agenda, Barstow High School's associate principal, Scott Godfrey, will replace current Principal Ed Cheek as the head of the school, and will be assisted by Carolyn Norman, current principal of Barstow Junior High School, who is slated to become assistant principal at the high school, according to the agenda.

Other changes include Cameron Elementary School Principal Derrick Delton replacing Norman and taking the reins at Barstow Junior High School. Also Christina San Nicholas, principal of Barstow Intermediate School, is slated to replace Delton as principal of Cameron.
The reorganization comes after the district notified Cheek that he was being removed as the high school principal due to low test scores and a lack of instructional leadership at the school, according to Cheek.

It also comes after the Feb. 24 board decision to close Barstow Intermediate School, which cut several administrator positions at the school.

The assigning of administrators to different schools or positions for the 2009-10 school year was not based on seniority, said Teresa Healy, assistant superintendent of educational services.

According to Healy, the assignments were based on how well an administrator would fit at a particular school, as well as the needs of the school and the administrator's skills.

Superintendent Susan Levine and Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Jeff Malan were unavailable for comment as of press time Friday.

High school English teacher Lyn Schrader said she and other teachers at the high school were not surprised at the idea of Godfrey being up for replacing Cheek, after Cheek announced his planned departure.

"We assumed that that was a possibility," Schrader said.

Michael Gomez, assistant principal of Barstow Junior High School, said some junior high students are writing letters to board members protesting Norman leaving their school.

"Anytime you introduce change, there's always a feeling of uneasiness," said Gomez.

He also said that staff response to Delton potentially coming on board at the junior high has been "for the most part very, very positive."

"Whatever decision comes from the board, we will focus on the kids," said Schrader.

The district will keep the same principals at its six other elementary schools, Hinkley School and Central High School next year.
The school board meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the staff development center of the district office at 551 South Avenue H.
