BARSTOW • The potential of a charter school expanding its campus to Barstow Community College has prompted a meeting between officials from Barstow Unified School District and the college.

BUSD Superintendent Susan Levine met recently with BCC Acting President Cal Brinkerhoff and discussed the possibility of Excelsior Education Center, a Victorville-based charter school, setting up shop on the Barstow Community  College campus.

Barstow district officials have, in the past, objected to the idea of charter schools coming to Barstow and expressed concerns about the home-study-based program draining the district of students.

"I didn't make any promises" nor did Levine request it, said Brinkerhoff.

Both Brinkerhoff and Levine noted that space may be an issue regarding Excelsior moving onto the campus.

"Space is very tight up here," Brinkerhoff said.

Excelsior, which currently has a small office on East Williams Street that serves 68 students in Barstow, contacted the college in late March about the possibility of relocating its office to BCC and using some classrooms, according to officials from Excelsior.

"A campus setting is what they're looking for," said Brinkerhoff. The charter school program, which would mirror the program set up at Victor Valley College, would serve grades seven through 12, and aim to enroll high school students in college courses while they also complete their high school curriculum.

A number of students from Barstow High School also currently participate in the concurrent enrollment program at BCC.

According to Brinkerhoff, he and Levine talked about Excelsior in addition to discussing partnership programs between the college and the school district.

Levine noted, in an e-mail, that Excelsior has not submitted any formal requests to BCC yet.

Brinkerhoff said that any decisions regarding Excelsior moving on to the college campus would have to come before Interim President Richard Jones, who is currently on vacation, and the college board of trustees. Brinkerhoff said Excelsior is aware that he is serving as president until Jones returns May 4, and has compiled information to give to Jones upon his return.
