BARSTOW •  The Barstow High School softball team's bats rained hits in the first inning on Friday.

By the third inning the real downpour came.

The Aztecs game against Granite Hills was suspended due to rain on Friday afternoon at Barstow High School. Barstow was leading 13-4 with no outs in the bottom of the third inning when the game was called.

The current plan is for the schools to restart the game from the bottom of the third inning on Thursday. BHS Athletic Director Vince Williams said final plans would be solidified at a Wednesday meeting between the Desert Sky League athletic directors.

"If we get to start over, I'm feeling good," Granite Hills coach Carolyn Ruhm said. Ruhm is also the Granite Hills athletic director. "If we have to start from here, that's OK too."

If the game is played Thursday, the Aztecs will play three straight days with games against Burroughs on Wednesday and Friday.

The final call to suspended the game came after a drainage ditch behind home plate began to spew onto the field and eventually into Granite Hills dugout. Barstow coach Daron Banks said the ditch frequently dumps air conditioning fluid and sewage from the high school alongside the field even during dry days.

"I thought we could have finished the game out except when it got pretty bad, but we all still wanted to play," said senior catcher Cayla Schreiner, who added that she'd played softball through rain about three other times.

The Aztecs hitting slump from Wednesday's game at Victorville appeared to disappeared against Grainte Hills. Barstow jumped out to a 7-0 lead starting with Alyssa Maldonado's leadoff home run.

"It pumped us up," Schreiner. "It got us going. We all got into it after that."

The rest of the lineup responded with eight out of nine batters earning hits in the shortened game. Andrew Kolwyck was 3-for-3 with a home run. Keona Duran was 2-for-2.

The Aztecs gained a 10-0 lead in the second inning when Karleen Calvert and Hannah Ulibarri's back-to-back hits brought in runs. Granite Hills came back in the top of third with the team's first hits and runs of the afternoon. The Cougars finished out the inning with four runs on five hits.

The game  was officially suspended after Kolwyck's three-run homer in the bottom the third inning. Sprinkles of rain began hitting field during the bottom of the first inning and slowly increased throughout the game. The conditions started to affect play with fielders sliding and each pitcher having problems griping the ball.
