BARSTOW • The Barstow High Schools boys tennis team was able to get away from the wind Friday.
The Aztecs had no such reprieve Tuesday afternoon.
The Aztecs lost 16-2 against Burroughs High School on Tuesday afternoon at the Theris Brown Tennis Courts at Dana Park. The game was the Aztecs' Desert Sky League opener after their match at Silverado High School on Friday was canceled due to strong winds. It will be replayed on April 19.
Strong gusting winds did the Aztecs no favors throughout their match with Burroughs. Winds blew off and on throughout the match in up to 30 mph bursts.
"They've been training real hard," Barstow coach Leah Johnston said. "They put in time even when I'm not around, and it's like this wind just throws them off their game.
"It's like those Mounds and Almond Joy candy bars: 'Sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes you don't.' Well, today was just one of those times that we don't."
Burroughs dominated the match. The Aztecs were shutout in six matches and were outscored 97-44 in games.
No. 1 singles player Tiago Serapiao scored the Aztecs' lone wins yet he still felt the affects of the wind. Serapiao said the wind threw off the timing of his serve and led to a loss to Tony Cohoa, Burroughs No. 1 singles player.
"Sometimes you think the ball is going to go in and it goes out," Serapiao said. "Sometimes you think the ball is going to go out but it goes in. I hate serving in the wind.
"I don't have a really good serve. I need the ball perfect to serve. If you have a good serve, the point is like yours already, but if you don't it'll just mess you up."
Serapiao, who entered the match with a 13-2 record, was handled fairly easily by Cohoa with a 6-2 win.
"I got smashed," Serapiao said. "It happens. Their No. 1 was pretty good. I didn't play good at all, and he was playing good. I'll beat him next time."
Serapia bounced back in his next two matches, winning 6-1 and 6-0.
While Barstow High School real spring break starts Friday, Tuesday's match ended an unusual, midseason break for the tennis team. The Aztecs were playing in their first match March 18.
