BARSTOW A Barstow man was arrested Sunday on charges that he raped a 16-year-old Yermo girl.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested Edwin Jones, 31, at about 11 p.m. Sunday night on suspicion of forcible rape and sexual intercourse with a minor.

Jones was arrested from the Barstow Church of God in Christ. Barstow sheriff's station Sgt. Eric Mello said someone from the church reported the crime, initially to the Barstow Police Department, but they transferred it to the sheriff's department because the crime took place in Yermo.

Mello was unsure what Jones' connection to the church was, and Pastor Dave Norman was not available Tuesday.

The girl and Jones knew each other, Mello said. The rape took place at the victim's home on April 1 but was not reported until Sunday. No weapons were involved in the attack, Mello said.

To report information relating to the crime, call the Barstow sheriff's station at 760-256-4838. To remain anonymous, call WE-TIP at 1-800-78-CRIME.
