BARSTOW A suspected gang member faces a charge of attempted murder after reportedly firing on a Barstow Police Department officer.

Katawn Raheam Rogers, 26, was arrested Thursday evening from his home in Barstow on suspicion of attempted murder on a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon and being a member of a criminal street gang, according to a Barstow Police Department report.

The officer was uninjured.

The incident began that morning at about 12:14 a.m. when a woman living in the public housing in the area of Lassen, Bighorn and Zion Drive called 911 to report a man was outside her home pounding on the door and making threats, according to a Barstow Police Department report.

The man, later identified as Rogers, had previously argued with the woman's husband, who was not home at the time, and threatened him with a handgun, Barstow Police Department Sgt. Andy Espinoza, Sr., said. The reason for the dispute was not clear, he said.

After talking to the homeowner, an officer whose name was not released due to concerns for his safety went to the backyard of the home to search for the intruder. As the officer was searching, Rogers allegedly fired on him six to eight times but did not hit him, Espinoza said.

The officer did not return fire because he was unable to find a target, he said. Barstow officers, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies and California Highway Patrol officers set up a perimeter and searched the area but were unable to find the shooter.

After collecting evidence from the scene and interviewing witnesses, officers identified Rogers as the suspect. They arrested him from an address on the 500 block of Melissa Avenue at 8:26 p.m., according to county jail records.

"We were lucky that night that nobody got hurt," Espinoza said.

According to county jail records, Rogers was being held at West Valley Detention Center Friday with his bail set at $1 million. Espinoza said Rogers had a previous criminal record in the Los Angeles area.
