Heavy winds rattle bushes along Hawthorne Drive on Monday afternoon.

High gusts of wind hit a record of 58 miles per hour as measured at the Barstow-Daggett Airport. Wind speeds in other parts of Barstow ranged in the mid-50 mile-per-hour range, according to Barry Pierce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Pierce said that the winds are part of a winter storm system that recently affected Los Angeles and predicted that the winds would mellow out by Monday evening and would reduce to 10 to 20 miles per hour by nightfall.
