BARSTOW - Burglars smashed through an office window of the Barstow Pregnancy Center and walked out the back door with several pieces of electronics Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

Two computers, an external hard drive, a DVD and VHS player, a vacuum cleaner and a phone were among the missing Thursday morning when members of the center's staff came to work, said Molly Ulm, director of the center. She estimated the electronics were worth $2,000. The burglars also left piles of baby clothes on the floor.

"They took stuff they could sell," Ulm said. "They ransacked the place and made a big mess."

Ulm said the computers and hard drive contained much of the center's files, statistics and grant information but little patient or client information. She said clients should not worry about their personal information being stolen.

The break-in occurred sometime during Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, Ulm said. This is the second burglary the Barstow Pregnancy Center has had since it moved in 2005 to its location on the 500 block of Williams Street. In June 2006, the center's storage building, a studio apartment behind the main building, was burgled. Thieves stole strollers, changing tables and other baby supplies then, Ulm said.

Ulm said the center was able to help a few clients on Thursday but remained closed for most of the day. She hoped the center would reopen on Friday if she could replace the DVD and VHS player, which the center uses for their parenting classes. The center offers services to residents with unplanned or crisis pregnancies including pregnancy tests, doctor referrals, advice about continuing to go to school or work and prenatal and postnatal guidance.

Police officers found footprints, fingerprints and tire tracks at the center. Ulm said a suspicious couple came to the center on Monday and took a stroller, left as a donation, off the front porch without asking.

The police are investigating but could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon. Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Barstow Police Department at 256-2211.
