BARSTOW - When the Barstow Community College women's basketball team need a hard shove, all they got were a few pushes Monday night.

The Vikings made one stand late in the first half against San Bernardino Valley College and then quietly backed off in a 81-54 loss at the Jim Parks Gymnasium.

"When that team pushed, we kind of folded," Barstow coach Kim Ensing said.

The Vikings (7-10; 2-3 Foothill Conference) hung with San Bernardino for most of the first half. The Coyotes took a 10-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the half, but Barstow charged back. DeAira Williams' layup with 4:42 remaining put the Vikings within two points.

The Vikings stopped the next two San Bernardino possessions but couldn't hold onto the ball long enough to tie the score. The Coyotes went on a run and finished the half with a 12-point lead.

"We gave them a couple of pushes and talked about it in the locker room," Ensing said. "In order to beat a Foothill conference team, you need to give more than a two-minute push. We brought it to within two and then backed off."

San Bernardino Valley coach Sue Crebbin didn't categorize either team's play as pristine basketball, but the Coyotes managed to come out running and scoring in the second half.

Shy Walker, who led all scorers with 19 points. opened the half with 3-pointer on the right wing. The Coyotes worked the ball around Barstow's zone defense and went on to knock down three more 3-pointers in the first eight minutes of the second half.

"We look a little sluggish, but we executed when we needed to," Crebbin said. "I'm not sure it was the great for spectators to watch or the coaches, but we'll take it."

When the Coyotes weren't knocking down 3-point shots, they were grabbing rebounds underneath and continuing possession. They won the rebounding battle 42-30 against Barstow and each player grabbed at least two rebounds for San Bernardino.

Barstow was coming off a 68-49 win against Victor Valley College on Saturday. Ensing said her team experienced a "lagover" from the win.

"The games are something a team gets up for. I mean, that's the fun stuff. For us to not come into this game with a certain amount of enthusiasm is bewildering"

The Vikings' toughest stretch of the season continues Wednesday when they play Rio Hondo at 5 p.m. at home. The Barstow men's team plays at 7 p.m.
