YERMO - Freezy Smalls' new coaching philosophy is direct and to the point - run.

Smalls, the Silver Valley girls basketball coach, has helped his team do a complete 180 degree turn from last season. The Trojans finished last season with a record of 5-14 overall and 4-6 in Desert Mountain League play. Silver Valley overwhelmed Mammoth in a 61-22 victory Friday night. The win gives the Trojans their fifth win of the season and keeps them undefeated in the DML. They still have eight DML games left to play which gives them eight chances to better last year's record.

Smalls said the team's new found endurance has made the difference this season.

"Run, run, run, that's been our key," Smalls said. "No one can run with us. That's been our main focus this year. We can run the floor for four quarters."

Quickness was definitely a factor in Friday's game. The Huskies were often caught off guard by the Trojans as they brought the ball upcourt and gave up several turnovers. Mammoth lost the ball without getting a shot off in their first eight possessions of the game allowing Silver Valley to go up 19-0 in the first five minutes of the game.

China Clay led the Trojans with 17 steals in the game. Clay added 20 points and 10 rebounds to earn her first triple double of her high school career.

"Wow, I'm proud of myself. I didn't know I got a triple-double," Clay said. "I just ran a lot and pushed hard. That put me in position to get the ball."

Silver Valley's strong play forced Mammoth into a mercy-rule situation on Friday. A running clock is used in CIF-Southern Section basketball as a mercy rule whenever the score differential is 40 points or more. Although the Trojans only reached that size of a lead with two minutes to play, it is the first time they have been in that position this season.

"We played good, but we were slow to start in the second half," Smalls said. "We should have kept pushing. I just think the girls didn't expect to be up by so much so fast, so it shocked them a bit."
