BARSTOW - Several reports of gunshots in Barstow Heights led deputies to arrest a man they suspect fired them early Thursday morning.

John Ramirez, 26, is currently in custody at the Barstow Jail on weapons charges, but Sgt. Manny Mendoza of the Barstow sheriff's station expects to additionally book him for suspicion of shooting at an inhabited dwelling.

Just after midnight on Thursday, the Barstow sheriff's station began receiving calls from around the 27000 block of Rimrock Road of at least 15 gunshots fired from a white car. Deputy Jimmy Walker, who was in the area, responded within 30 seconds of the first call received, Mendoza said, and pulled over a white car driving without headlights in the area.

In the back seat of the car, Walker found a Tech 9 semi-automatic sub-machine gun and shell casings, suggesting rounds had been fired from inside the car, Mendoza said. Walker arrested Ramirez, a passenger in the car, for suspicion of possession of an assault weapon, the gun, possession of a dangerous weapon, a set of brass knuckles, and possession of a firearm with altered identification - there was no serial numbers on the gun.

Later, deputy Chris DeKeyrel located a residence in the area that had been hit by bullets. Mendoza said six rounds chipped paint on the outside of the home and one entered the house and was lodged in a wall. No one was injured. Detectives are working with DeKeyrel to determine if the round inside the home came from the gun found with Ramirez.
