BARSTOW - A man shot in a weekend robbery remains in critical condition at Barstow Community Hospital on Monday evening.

Barstow police officers found the 53-year-old Barstow man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the stomach in his residence on the 300 block of Pallesi Street at about 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sgt. Andy Espinoza Sr. said. The victim told police at the scene that two light-skinned black men attempted to rob him, shot him and then fled the residence.

The victim was taken Barstow Community Hospital where he underwent surgery and is still in critical condition. Espinoza said the weather on Sunday night prevented a helicopter transport for the victim to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Police are investigating the shooting and talking to witnesses at the scene. No further description of the two men is available at this time, Espinoza said. Espinoza does not think the shooting was a random act of violence, that the assailants knew the victim in some capacity before shooting him.

"There's always something that leads the bad guys to their target," he said.
