BARSTOW - The Barstow police department arrested a man on Sunday morning in connection to the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl.

Tyrone Smith Jr., 27, was booked into the Barstow Jail for suspicion of rape by force or fear and other sexual assault charges, a police report stated. Smith, on parole for burglary, was arrested at his work.

Det. Jeremy Bledsoe said Smith was a distant friend of the family. He does not think Smith is connected to other sexual assaults still under investigation.

According to the police report, the victim told police that Smith had forced himself on her at a residence on Fredricks Street. The victim was being treated at Barstow Community Hospital when police interviewed her. She was later released and is with her family, Bledsoe said.
