BARSTOW - The Mojave Water Agency will hold its monthly meeting at Barstow Community College on Thursday evening.

The agency normally meets at its headquarters in Apple Valley, but Beverly Lowry, who represents the Barstow-area on the agency's board, said the location change will give Barstow residents chance to voice their water-related concerns closer to home and allow the agency to see the college's new xeriscape garden.

"It's an example of how we can have a beautiful yard without using a lot of water," Lowry said.

Lowry said the fires burning around Southern California show the dangers of California's current drought condition and the importance of water conservation. The agency will present the college with a $60,000 check to hire a full-time grounds specialist dedicated to the garden. The gardener will also teach gardening classes to the community and plant the seeds of a gardening program at the college.

The meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Learning Resource Center Conference Room. Before the meeting, a presentation will occur in the garden. The agency will discuss the Regional Recharge and Recovery project in the Victor Valley. The agency manages the region's water to assure stability and sustained use.
