BARSTOW - Business and leisure travelers will soon have another place to rest in Lenwood when the La Quinta Inn & Suites opens its doors.

Construction of the 103-room inn could begin in December, and the business could start operating as soon as Aug. 2008, said Kevin Chauhan, owner of Hansot Hotel Group. The company owns three hotels in Victorville, but the La Quinta will be the group's first venture in Barstow.

He said the hotel will cater to both corporate and leisure travelers, and room rates will average from $130 to $150 per night.

Chauhan said that he chose the location in order to attract visitors to the Tanger Outlet Center and nearby attractions.

"I believe that Barstow, and especially the Lenwood exit, has a very good future," he said.
Co-owner of the hotel, Ashka Patel, acknowledged that La Quinta brand will compete with the Holiday Inn Express, and the newly-built Hampton Inns but she expects there to be enough travelers to go around.

"In no way has Barstow reached its peak for hotel development," she said.

The hotel will include a fitness center, pool, spa, a 2,000 square foot business center and 20-seat theater for guest use. The hotel's 40 suites - including 23 with private balconies - will have a living room, sofa, microwave and refrigerator. The hotel will also have eight whirlpool suites, she said.

Chauhan said that the hotel is expected to require 15 to 20 employees for its front desk and housekeeping department. He said the company will begin hiring at least six months before the hotel opens.

Patel said that once built, the La Quinta will be the highest hotel in Barstow because it's on elevated land.

"Barstow may not have that beach view, but people still like to look outside," she said.
